Zachariah ''Zack'' Davis, Iii

God in His love and mercy, called to rest Zachariah Davis, III, who died of a heart attack on Friday, November 23, 2007, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland, at the age of 71.

He was born on February 2, 1936 to the late Addie and Zachariah Davis, of King George, Virginia. He was the youngest of their five children. Preceding him in death is his son, Zachariah, IV, his sister, Edna Johnson and brother, Zacharias, Jr. At an early age, he became ''Sonny'' to all. It seemed to stick with him. He was also known to some as just ''Zack.''

In 1954, Zack received his high school diploma from the then segregated Ralph Bunche High School in Edgehill, Virginia. While in high school, Zack developed a love for watching sports. His favorite was baseball. He also enjoyed music, new cars and going out to have a good time with his friends. While in high school, he was known best for being ''most friendly'' and ''most talkative.'' His schoolmates identified his personality well.

After graduating, Zack left King George County to enlist in the United States Army. He served his country for three years before settling down to raise a family. From this union with Ms. Zelda Carter, he had five children, Gwendolyn, Anthony, Vanessa, (Zacharia IV) and Ricky. He moved his family back home to Virginia with intentions of re-enlisting and going to Spain. Instead, he began working with the General Services Administration in Washington, DC. He later divorced and moved to New York in 1969 then later to New Jersey where he stayed for the
next 30 years. There he married Ms. Glorine Buckner and had twin daughters, Sandra and Sondra. Zack also began his career with the United States Postal Service during this time. He would remain there as a postal carrier until his retirement in 1992 with an admirable 31 years of Federal service. Retirement brought him back to the south where he finallly settled in Lothian, Maryland.

Zack loved being outdoors and on the open road. As long as he could drive somewhere, it was a possibility he would be there. He enjoyed seeing and doing new things. He would be seen regularly within King George just ''popping in'' to say hello to his friends and family. His visits would be unexpected yet full of laughing and joking. He didn't expect anything from his friends but what he called good company surrounded by good people. He had a quick tongue and could make anyone laugh at his stories and jokes. He kept telling them until the Lord called him home. Zack knew his health was failing him yet chose to carry on with life.

He is survived by four daughters, Gwendolyn Baily, Fort Washington, Md., Vanessa Davis,Colonial Beach, Sandra Davis-Conway, Woodbridge, Va. and Sondra Davis-Morton, Upper Marlboro, Md.; two sons, Anthony Davis, Accokeek, Md and Ricky Davis, Clinton, Md; two stepchildren, Leona Hollins, Chesapeake, Va and Leon Johnson, Jr., Accokeek, Md; one daughter-in-law, Andrea Davis, Accokeek, Md and two sons-in-law, Antrone Conway, Woodbridge and Raymond Morton, Upper Marlboro, Md. He also leaves one sister, Anna Richardson, Washington, DC and one brother, Thomas Davis, Philadelphia, Pa; and one niece, LaShay Childs of Bowling Green, Va. His legacy will also continue within his 15 grandchildren, Erica Davis, DeAngelo Davis, Lavisha Davis, Adria Davis, Antonio Davis, Tierra Davis, Robert Davis, DeAndre Davis, Geneva Davis, Jasmine Conway, Taylor Conway, Ariana Bailey, Jordan Conway, Raymond Morton, Jr. and Asya Davis; three great-grandchildren, Emani Davis, Destiny James and Taylor Drummond; and a host of cousins.

There are the many people he considered special in his life, including but certainly not limited to Shirley Washington, Joe Tolliver, Willie Thomas, Winfield Shanklin, Josephine Burnette, Christine Foster, Helen Buckner, Karen Buckner, Charlie Jones and other members of his ''Postal Service gang from New York.'' Doretha Ford, Kevin Johnson and other acquaintances are too many to name.
