Deacon William (Bill) Henry Bumbrey, entered into eternal rest at 3:30pm at Mary Washington Hospital on Saturday, April 21, 2007 surrounded by his family. He was born on October 5, 1926 to the late Galvia and Mary Bumbrey.
Deacon Bumbrey accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and became a member of the Antioch Baptish Church. After the death of his parents, he moved his membership to Little Ark Baptist Church under the pastoralship of the late Rev. John W. Chapman, Sr. He served as a dedicated trustee and deacon (over 30 years), President of the Pastor's Aide Ministry (17 years), Volunteer Chorus and the LABC Men's Chorus (over 40 years). In the early years, he was Chairman of the Kitchen Committee and faithfully attended Church until his health began to fail. He became a resident of Heritage Hall on August 8, 2002 and faithfully attended and participated in the Church services there.
He was a former member of the St. Luke Lodge, King George Masonic Lodge #314 and still had active membership in The American Legion Post #329 and American Legion Post #89.
Deacon Bumbrey was a WWII Navy Veteran. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center as a Boiler and Heating Mechanic after 29 years of faithful service. He also provided for his family by working as a residential and commercial building contractor and commercial fisherman. As a builder, he constructed one of the major additions to the Little Ark Baptist Church along with another contractor. He built the original pavillion at Mt. Bethel Beach and the Chapel at Lee Funeral Home. As a commercial fisherman, he always had a fishing boat in which he provided oysters and crabs to Captain Billy's Restaurant on the Maryland shores for many years.
He had many hobbies such as hunting, fishing, playing baseball and gardening. He played sandlot baseball with the team called the Dahlgren Frogs. Many years ago, he loved to travel to Covington, Kentucky to see his Aunt Bea and Uncle Melvin and attend the Cincinnatic Reds baseball games at the Ohio Riverfront Stadium.
He was united in Holy Matrimony to Pansy Scranage on February 8, 1948. Two sons, Melvin and Sterling and one daughter, Rowena were born to this union. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Bumbrey.
Deacon Bumbrey leaves to cherish his many memories his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Pansy Bumbrey; three children Melvin Bumbrey, Sr., Sterling Bumbrey and wife Ann, Rowena B. Pollard and husband Tyrone, all of King George, Virginia. One Goddaughter Arzellar Scranage Eldridge(Calvin) of Lorton, Virginia. Eleven grandchildren; Keith Tyler (Earnese), Melvin Bumbrey, Jr., Shana Curtis (Raymond), Chevita Bumbrey, Shon Bumbrey, Regina Banks (Dennis), Alicia Cole(Lornell), Ryan Pollard(Beverly), Anitra Martin(Bryan), LorraLee Jordan(Leon) and Marcus Pollard. Fifteen great-grandchildren; a sister Minerva Scranage and her husband Charles of King George, Va. Two aunts, Clara Johnson of Dahlgren, Va., and Thelma Stanford and her husband Harold of Bowie, Md. Three sisters-in-law, Juanita Washington and Margie Bumbrey of King George and Mary B. Clark of Richmond, Va. Two brothers-in-law, Perry Scranage, Sr., and his wife Mary of King George and James Bland of Fredericksburg, Va., and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
