He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, crossing the Pacific Ocean six times, docking many ports to include Okinawa; Saipan; Seoul; Korea; and Tinsen, China. At the time of his service, there were 48 states in the United States, and he has traveled to 37 of them. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946.

He worked for the American Visco Corporation (A Cellophane Plant), in the Coating Department until 1978. When FMC Corporation closed the plant in 1978, he went to work at Quantico Marine Corps Base and retired from there in 1983. He then worked at the Salvation Army in Fredericksburg, Virginia until his second retirement in 1996 at the age of 76.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, his brothers: Aubrey Owens and Anthony III, and two sisters: Lucille Smith and Marjorie Williams.
