Vernon E Mcdowney, Sr.

On Friday, July 24, 2015, God extended His almighty hand of love and gently took Vernon E. McDowney, Sr., to a home of joy, peace and happiness. "Button", as he was graciously known by his family and friends, was born on October 11, 1956 Louise West McDowney and the late Westly McDowney in Colonial Beach, VA. He received education in the Westmoreland Public Schools.

He acknowledged and accepted Jesus Christ as his creator and savior at an early age and joined Macedonia Baptist Church during the pastorate of the late Rev. R.E. Cabbell. He was ordained as a Deacon on May 13, 2003 under the pastorate of Rev. W.I. Roane. He was a very devoted member always eager to be in the house of the Lord. Always testifying about the Goodness of the Lord. He loved the Lord and the Lord blessed him because he blessed others. He will truly be missed by all who know and loved him.

He had a passion for landscaping, making sure the vehicles were sparkling clean and maintenance was well maintained. His most enjoyable times was spent with his family, spending quality time with his mother at the dinner table eating his favorite chicken and wings smothered in gravy, bonding time he spent with his grandson Zy'Kahri whom he often referred to as his "Buddy", and traveling to his In-Laws house every Sunday after church for family gatherings.

Vernon was a diehard redskins fan. Win or lose his loyalty for his team was 100% redskins as he would always say. Even when they lost he would throw his hat across the room but still a redskin fan.

He leaves to cherish fond memories; a loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Wendy McDowney; two daughters, Shavante McDowney of Colonial Beach, VA, and Anna Lilaenthal of Newport News, VA; one son Vernon McDowney, Jr of Norfolk, VA; four grandchildren Zy'Kahari McDowney of Colonial Beach, VA, Caroline Frost and Eva Lilaenthal both of Newport News, VA, Isabella Beazile of Norfolk, VA; mother Lousie West McDowney of Colonial Beach, VA; two sisters Cheryl Jones and Valerie White both of Colonial Beach, VA; three brothers Irving McDowney of Colonial Beach, VA, Neal McDowney of St. Stephens, VA, Mark McDowney of Hampton, VA; Father-in-law Douglas Thornton of King William, VA; Five sister-in-laws Ann Spurlock and Verna Anderson of King William, VA, Brenita Johnson of Ruther Glen, VA, Bernice McDowney of St. Stephens, VA, Kimberly McDowney of Hampton, VA; Five brother-in-laws William Jones, Jr. of Colonial Beach, VA, Jeorme White of King George, VA, Winston Thornton of Ruther Glen, VA, John Thornton, Bobby Thornton, Lewis McPhearson and Jimmy Thornton all of Richmond, VA; Four Uncles, Andrew McDowney and Rev.
