Trustee Charles Edward Scranage, fondly known as "Eddie" to many, was born on March 19, 1921 in Spotsylvania, Virginia to the late Edward and Addie Scranage. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Annie Minerva Bumbrey on Oct. 19, 1941. One son, Donald Charles, and one daughter, Elaine Prezine, were born to this union.
Trustee Scranage accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and became a member of the Little Ark Baptist Church under the pastoralship of the late Rev. George Carter. He attended Little Ark School as a child and had to drop out of school in 7th grade to begin working to help support his family. He continued to serve faithfully at Little Ark under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Chapman, Sr., Rev. Dr. Michael T. Bell, and the late Rev. Dr. Ben Jones. He served as a dedicated trustee (over fifty years), chair of the Men's Ministry, chair and 'head chef' of the Culinary (Kitchen) Committee, member of the LABC Men's Chorus, and provided custodial services to LABC for many years.
Trustee Scranage served over 24 years of combined military and civilian service. He began employment at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in 1941 in Public Works. His job entailed driving tractor trailers cross country carrying military ammunition. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII from 1943 - 46. He returned to NSWC after being honorably discharged in 1946 and continued to serve faithfully until 1965 when he suffered a heart attack and was compelled to retire on disability.
He continued to provide for his family over the next 30 years by working various jobs: as a residential building contractor in Mount Vernon, Virginia, as a heavy duty machine operator during the development of Presidential Lakes in King George, Virginia, as the night custodian at King George Middle School, as a security guard for the King George county public school system during evening sports events, and as a newspaper delivery man for the Free Lance Star. During his later years (even until his health began to fail) he continued doing 'special projects' for those who knew of his building skills and value.
He had many hobbies such as fishing, hunting, gardening, cooking (especially grilling), selling crabs at "Eddie's Market", and playing his harmonica. While at NSWC, he also served as a caddie on the golf course.
He was member of the American Legion Post #329 for 63 years and served as Post Commander for more than 10 years; he was a former member of the Masonic Lodge #314 both in King George, Virginia. He was awarded an honorary high school diploma in 2001 as a result of service for his country and excellence in community service. As his health began to fail, he continued to let his light shine and demonstrate the love of Christ, even during his last months as a resident of the Golden Living Nursing Home in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Trustee Charles E. Scranage entered into eternal rest at 11:40pm at Mary Washington Hospital on Tuesday, July 21, 2009. He leaves to cherish his many memories, his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Annie Scranage; two children Donald C. Scranage (and his wife Margaree) of Oxon Hill, Maryland. and Elaine S.
