In the early morning of August 13, 1955 in Ripley, Maryland, Thomas Nathaniel Woodland was the last of six siblings born to the late, Mr. & Mrs. Phillip H. Woodland, Sr. He entered into this world as ''Hurricane Connie'' brought havoc upon the town, but ''passed away'' in his sleep to go to his heavenly home quietly and gently just as he lived, in the early hours on October 20th of 2007.
Nathaniel, known as ''Nate'' by his close friends, attended Archbishop Neale Parochial School in LaPlata, Maryland from kindergarten to the 10th grade. He then graduated from Lackey High School in Indian Head, Maryland. After high school graduation, he attended Morgan State University.
In 1975, Nathaniel enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for 3 years during the Vietnam Era. Upon his discharge, he entered the Southern Maryland Police Academy where he graduated at the top of his class. He then became Sheriff Deputy for the Charles County Sheriff Department.
As a youngster, Nathaniel attended the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Pomfret, where he was baptized, received his first Holy Communion and Confirmation. He also served as Altar Boy.
In 1983, Nathaniel met Erica Johnson and on July 5, 1986, they were married. To this union, they were blessed with twin boys Derrick and Evan and then Steven. He adored his three sons and was involved in every phase of their lives from getting them to the bus stop, assisting with homework, driving to football practices, playing video games and providing driving instructions.
For 17 years, Nathaniel was employed as the Office and Delivery Manager for the Catterton Printing Firm before leaving on disability.
Nathaniel leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Erica of twenty-one years, his three sons, Derrick, Evan and Steven, one granddaughter, Jasmine Woodland, his mother-in-law, Martha Hendley and father-in-law, Franklin C. Johnson. He is survived by his two sisters, Ms. Catherine W. Gray of Prince George's, Md. and Dr. Carolyn W. Boulware of Princeton Junction, N.J. Three brothers, Phillip H. Woodland, II of Chester, Va., Dr. Calvin E. Woodland of Hartford, Conn., and James R. Woodland, Sr. of Accokeek, Md. He also leaves to mourn his death, Mr. & Mrs. James G. Carter, aunt and uncle, Mrs. Geraldine Woodland, aunt; sisters-in-law, Christine Jackson, Gail Johnson, Geraldine Payton, Barbara Beverly, Judith Woodland and Elsie Woodland; brothers-in-law, Hilliard Boulware, II, Franklin A. Johnson, Larry Johnson and Austin Gray; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
