Thomas D. Lewis the second son of seven children was born in Washington, DC on October 10, 1949, to the late Francis O. and Susan J. Lewis. He departed this life on March 12, 2025 at the Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall, MD. Tommy grew up in Washington, DC and was educated in the DC Public School System. He was quiet and obedient, but a no-nonsense young man. Tommy was also independent and wanted to earn money at an early age, so he was always job hunting. Tommy was hired to serve the daily newspaper and often enlisted his younger siblings, David and LaVerne (Cookie), to do the legwork. Cookie didn’t know until four years ago that Tommy paid David more cookies than he paid her. She is still a little sour about that.
Tommy participated in the Cadet Corps in high school and loved it. We were not surprised that after graduating from Frank W. Ballou High School, he enlisted in the military. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force where his career field was Heating and Refrigeration. Tommy switched to the U.S. Navy and became a Seabee, where he served for 20 years then retired. Since he was still a young man the U.S. Navy hired him as a Civilian and he worked 20 additional years I the same job. Tommy was stationed in Port Hueneme, CA during most of military career so he made Oxnard, CA his home. He loved fishing, hunting and the Washington Commanders.
Tommy married Sylvia Turner and their union was blessed with one daughter, LaShawn D. Lewis. Several years later he met and fell in love with Lumpai Dunn (Pai). After a loving courtship they were joined in holy matrimony. Tommy gained a son when he married Pai, he adopted Jasen and they became a family.
Tommy leaves to celebrate the memories of his daughter, LaShawn D. Lewis (MD), son Jasen Lewis (Amelia)(TX); two sisters Lucille B. Lewis (Silver Spring, MD) and LaVerne C. Walker (Clinton, MD); four brothers Calvin F. (Charlotte Hall, MD); David T. (Accokeek, MD); Joseph E. (Clinton, MD) and Derrick A. (Loretta) (Fort Washington, MD), granddaughter Tarkia Lewis, 3 grandsons, Conner, Kyle and Nicholas Lewis, 5 nieces, 7 nephews, 5 great nieces, 12 great nephews; 3 great great nieces and a host of cousins, other relatives and good friends. Tommy was preceded in death by his wife Lumpai Lewis and parents Francis O. and Susan J. Lewis.
