Theodore Roosevelt Harris, Jr - affectionately known as “Ted” entered into eternal rest on January 25, 2021 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring , Md. Ted was born on March 20, 1948 in Dahlgren, VA to the late Theodore Roosevelt and Sarah Virginia Johnson Harris. Ted was the oldest of seven children – four boys and three girls.
Ted graduated from King George High School in 1966. He joined the United States Navy on June 12, 1967. He was stationed in California and was assigned to the USS Paricutin (AE-18). While on the Paricutin, he served as an ammunition supply inspector. Most of Ted’s time in the Navy was spent at sea. His tour of duty included Vietnam and the Philippines. During his naval career, Ted received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal W/01 Bronze Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/ Device and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea). Ted was very proud of the time that he spent in the Navy and of his accomplishments.
After spending four years in the Navy, Ted returned home to Dahlgren, VA, and accepted a job as a supply inspector at was then the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Dahlgren Division. He served two years in the National Guard and he furthered his education by attending Germanna Community College. He retired from NSWC in 1994.
In 1971 he was joined in holy matrimony with Barbara Jean Williams of Tampa Florida.
Ted was a member of Little Ark Baptist Church. He was a faithful member, and attended church services until his health begin to fail. It was such a joy for him to sing along with the choir and enjoy the fellowship. One of his favorite sayings was, “He didn’t have to do it but He woke me up this morning.” He loved the Lord and He was not afraid to share this with anyone who would listen.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents and brother – Bernard Harris. He leaves to mourn Barbara and his daughters LeTia Scott (Omar) and Veronica Hillman (Warren), his son Terrell McLeod (Crystal), his grandchildren Perrin Scott, Davis Hillman, Evan Hillman, Ajah McLeod, Joi McLeod and his great grandchild Asai McLeod; his sisters Patricia Pryor, Deborah Harris, and Delarese Hemsley (Peter); his brothers Carl Harris (Lisa); Pastor Larry Robinson (Shirley); Kelvin Harris, his sisters-in-law Loyce Cole and Joyce Richardson; his aunt Irma Jackson; his special caregiver Vyundra Cole, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and their families, and many dear friends.
