Susie Catherine Lewis was born to the late Herbert and Estelle Holmes on July 2, 1937. God called her home to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Susie was preceded in death by her Husband Welford S. Lewis Sr, two sisters Gladys Berry and Mary Holmes, and four brothers; Herbert, Andrew, Nathan, and Charles Holmes.
Susie, best known as “Catherine”, was born and raised in Hustle, Virginia in Essex County. She accepted Christ and was baptized at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Hustle, VA. Catherine attended public schools in Essex County and graduated from Essex High School in 1954. After graduating, she went on to work as a housekeeper in the City of Fredericksburg. Catherine later took on a position at Mary Washington College where she climbed the ranks within the housekeeping department for over 40 years. After retirement she worked at Woodmount nursing home for a couple of years. Susie “Catherine” joined Shiloh New Site and was a member of the Watch Care and Women’s Ministries.
Susie “Catherine” was married to Welford Lewis for 42 years. To this union two children were born, Welford S. Lewis Jr and Anthony L. Lewis. Susie “Catherine” was known for her loving spirit, quick wit, and comical interactions with all. Catherine loved to travel and shop with her sisters and be with family whenever she could. She was often quoted saying “I used to play that ball” while showing her great grandchildren in the front yard for as long as she actively could.
Susie “Catherine” Lewis leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Welford S. Lewis Jr. and Anthony L. Lewis (Lynne) of Fredericksburg, VA, one Granddaughter Lashaun Cook (Rashad) of Chesapeake, VA, four great grandchildren, Desmond, Devin, Derrick, and Dailynn Cook of Chesapeake, VA; one Sister Antionette Holmes Pompey and one Brother Norman Holmes both of Hustle, VA; four sister in laws Jean Holmes of Hustle, VA, Vernell Holmes, Susie M. Mcllwain and Margaret Grant,all of Fredericksburg, VA, and one brother in law Ronald Lewis of New Carrollton, MD; one aunt Virginia Miller of Washington, DC; a devoted Best Friend Barbara Minor of Fredericksburg, VA; and host of nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Burial will be at Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
