Standley "Ray" Mcdowney

Standley Rayfield McDowney, Sr., better known as "Ray", was born in King George County on June 9, 1937 to the late Deacon Earnest Andrew and Deaconess Mary Emma Lomax McDowney, one of twelve children. Losing his battle to cancer, he departed this life early Monday morning August 4, 2014 at Westmoreland Rehabilitation Center, Colonial Beach, Virginia, surrounded by his wife of 53 years and siblings.
He attended public schools in King George County, Virginia. As a child growing up, "Ray" accepted Christ, was baptized and united with Good Hope Baptist Church where he received his religious training reinforcing his home training.
On June 17, 1961 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Lola Otelia Ashton. This union was blessed with one son, Standley, Jr. The couple settled in the Washington Metropolitan area where they lived for thirty three years.
After a brief stint at Frank Joy Construction Company, "Ray" gained employment at Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO). After 35 years at PEPCO, he retired and relocated back to King George County, Virginia. He then reunited with Good Hope Baptist Church and served with the Senior Ushers Ministry. "Ray" was a charter member of the King George Mill Men's Organization.
"Ray" was a workaholic. He enjoyed a delicacy of wild animals, spending time in his vegetable garden and consuming his wife's home cooked meals.
"Ray said what he thought and meant and did not allow others to change his mind. HE ALWAYS THOUGHT HE WAS RIGHT.
He was predeceased by his parents; his son; his brothers, James Henry and Andrew; sisters, Lillian, Viola and Leona; and foster sister, Bessie.
He leave to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Lola Otelia Ashton McDowney; daughter, Barbara Jean Payne, of Washington, DC; brothers, Earnest Webster (Alberta) of Warrenton, North Carolina, Alexander Veola (Darnell) of Brandywine, Maryland; sisters Evereda Taylor (Gerald) of Washington, DC, Willette Greene (Norman) of King George, Virginia, Tameenah Dubose (Joseph) of Fairfax Station, Virginia, and Emma Johnson (David) of King George, Virginia; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Patricia McDowney; BROTHER-IN-LAW, Fermon Ashton; uncle, Veola McDowney; special nephew, Kenneth McDowney; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
