Shirley Louise Harrison, affectionately known as Granny or Nana by her grandchildren, departed this life on October 6, 2015 at the home of her daughter, Barbara, surrounded by her loving family. Shirley was born to the union of the late John "Jake" and Jennie Harrison on August 2, 1945 in King George, VA.
She received her education at the Ralph Bunche School in King George, VA. At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church in Welcome, VA. Shirley later relocated to Baltimore, MD and accepted employment with the Maryland Paperbox Company. Several years later, she returned to Virginia. Following a brief employment with Building Blocks Daycare Center in Dahlgren, she decided to remain at home to provide love and care to her many grandchildren.
Not a day went by that she did not watch westerns with her two favorite actors John Wayne and Matt Dillion. When she was not watching westerns, she would sing along with Otis Redding and Al Green. Shirley loved being around her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She had a special bond with each and every one of them. "Jason" (her belt) was something they all feared.
Shirley loved our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a faithful and dedicated member at Salem Baptist Church. In 2012, she was ordained as a Deaconess. This was a proud day for our family. She served faithfully until her health would no longer allow her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah Harrison; parents, John "Jake" and Jennie Harrison; three brothers, Phillip Harrison, William Harrison, Sr., and John Harrison, Jr.; and three sisters, Henrietta Jones, Virginia Smith and Charlotte Harrison.
She leaves to cherish her memory five daughters; Sheral Harrison of Baltimore, MD, Hope Keene of Dumfries, VA, Venis Washington (Alan) of Stafford, VA, Barbara Harrison of King George, VA, and Jennie "Niecey" Bamba of Baltimore, MD; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Paulette Dorsey (Preston) of Baltimore, MD, Pauline Fields of King George, VA; two brothers, Walter Harrison (Linda) of Hyattsville, MD and Alfred Harrison (Joyce) of King George, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
