Shirley J. Elizabeth Robinson, was born on September 25, 1940 in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Rufus Johnson, Sr. and Emma Twisdale Johnson Edwards. God called her home peacefully from Retreat Doctors' Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on September 10, 2016 at the age of 75. She is survived by her husband, James Harold Robinson of Capital Heights, Maryland, as well as 11 siblings.
Liz, as she was lovingly referred to was educated in the Caroline County Public School System. She was introduced to James through the late Henry Twisdale after he asked, "Who's that pretty girl over there in the red dress?" during a night out at Mary's Inn on Route 1 in Ashland. Liz later joined him in Washington DC in 1961. They married in 1971 and resided in DC and Marlow Heights before settling in Capital Heights where they have lived for 35 years.
For 20 years, she worked at the Frito-Lay plant in Maryland as an assembly line worker where she bagged potato chips and other snacks. Later, she became an independent home caregiver for selected clients—becoming an extension of their family.
Liz would always ask how someone else was doing when she saw or spoke with people. Far from being shy, she was frank, had a great sense of humor and good spirit. Although she never had children, the large number of nephews and nieces she helped raise were all kids of "Aunt Liz".
She had grace, style and an eye for treasures whether antique figurines, china or statuary. When it came to sports, she admired Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens who she often referred to as her boyfriend.
In 2005, she was diagnosed with lung cancer but did not let grass grow under her feet. It was common to see her at the family's quarterly birthday celebrations.
Elizabeth leaves to cherish her loving memories: husband, James Harold "Mushie" Robinson; brothers— Rufus Johnson, Jr. (Camille), Wayne Johnson, William "BJ" Johnson (Rita), twins Donald Edwards (Sherrie), and Ronald Edwards (Jackie), Stewart Edwards (Betty); sisters— Katherine J. Stevens (Percy), Channie Layne (Tommie), Ruby Haynesworth (James), Phyllis Taft (Ray), and Patricia Moore (Clyde); one aunt Mrs. Fannie Woolfolk; seven brothers-in-law—Melvin Robinson (Delores), John Henry (Joyce), Tommy (deceased), Edward (deceased), Jackie Ray Robinson, Willie Robinson (Barbara), Bernard Robinson (Gilda); four sisters-in-law—Alice Smith (Herbert), Dorothy White (Leonard), Louise Robinson (deceased), Etheline Robinson (deceased); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
