Sedora Gwathmey DeLeaver quietly passed away into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 in the peace and comfort of her home.
On October 26, 1944, Sedora was born to Essie Braxton Gwathmey and the late Deacon Roscoe A. Gwathmey, Sr, in Upshaw (Aylett), Virginia.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. Paul Baptist Church, Aylett, Virginia.
In 1962, she graduated from Hamilton Holmes High School. She attended St. Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Virginia and Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia.
At Virginia Union, she met the love of her life, Douglas DeLeaver. They married in February 1966. To this blessed union was born two sons, Carlton and Gregg DeLeaver.
During the years she lived in Richmond, Virginia, Sedora was employed by C & P Telephone.
In 1971, she and her family relocated to Maryland. There she joined Severn Baptist Church, now the Church of Severn Run. At the Church, she was a faithful and dedicated servant.
Upon moving to Maryland, she also started her Daycare business in her home, where she cared and nurtured children for over thirty years. She actively participated with the Head Start Weekly Reader Program.
Sedora loved reading and studying the word of God. Her love of caring for flowers and plants was apparent not only in her home, but in her church as well. One of the highlights of her life was time spent baking and gardening with her granddaughter, Alex.
Sedora leaves to cherish her memories, her devoted husband, Douglas A. DeLeaver; two sons, Carlton E. DeLeaver and Gregg DeLeaver; a daughter-in-law, Kerstin DeLeaver; a loving granddaughter, Alexandria M. DeLeaver; her mother, Essie Braxton Gwathmey; three sisters, Saundra G. Taylor(her twin), Maurice E. Gwathmey and Uarda G. Barnes; three brothers, Roscoe A. Gwathmey, Jr., Charles H. Gwathmey(Elizabeth) and Spencer G. Gwathmey(Tamara); two sisters-in-law, LeMoine Pierce of Decatur, GA and Barbara Thomas of New Brunswick, NJ; she will also be fondly remembered by her aunts, Jeanette Branic, LaVerne Gwathmey, Burnette Gwathmey, Frances Gwathmey, Sylvia DeLeaver and a motherly devoted aunt, Elizabeth McAllister; her loving memory will live on with her nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. We will miss Sedora and will cherish the memories of the exemplary life she lived
