Sally Lozell Carter Williams was born on October 13, 1926 to Mr. and Mrs. William and Esther Carter in Lent, Virginia. She attended Mt. Olive Elementary School and at a young age, she helped make the most delicious soup in the school’s kitchen on a pot -bellied stove. She also got up early some Fridays to make homemade fudge which she sold for a penny per block to raise money for supplies for the school. There was never any left over.
Sally attended Mt. Olive school until the United States government, by eminent domain, took over Lent and surrounding areas for what is now Camp A.P. Hill. She then moved to Bowling Green, Va. and graduated from Union High School, where she excelled in Shop class, and graduated in 1945.
After high school, Sally spent time in Washington D.C.
and later went on to work for Mary Washington College, now the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. Soon after she met her husband, the late Mr. William Ralph Williams. They had a loving and harmonious relationship--she liked to cook and he liked to eat. She loved art, cooking and singing. She sung with Shiloh Baptist Church choir for many years.
She leaves to mourn her loss, two sisters, Dorothy Black and Esther Ivory; four nephews, John Carter, Stephen Black, Girard Black, William Carter Jr.; three nieces, Michele Carter, India Ivory, Inga Ivory; three great nephews; two great nieces; two great-great grandnephews; one great-great grandniece and a host of cousins, family and devoted friends.
