Ruby Mae Rollins was born to the late Boyd and Addie Rollins on January 10, 1939. She was one of three children born to this union. Her only brother, Horace Lee Rollins, was the first of the three siblings to depart from this world.
Early in her life, Ruby affirmed Jesus as her Redeemer and Savior and joined the Second New Hope Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Rev. Russell Robinson. She received her education in the public school system of the County of Spotsylvania, Virginia under the guidance of Ms. Eleanor Lewis.
In July 1965, she and her two daughters, Cindy and Linda moved from Fredericksburg, Virginia. to New York City. During the many years that they resided in New York, they were inseparable and deeply devoted to one another. Early on in New York City, she became fully employed at the Hopp Press Plastic Company. With encouragement from her daughter Cindy, she decided to make a career change, and accepted employment with the New York City Board of Education. She was assigned to work with children ages six thru twelve for many years. She truly enjoyed working with the children, and always had a delightful story to share with others about her interaction with them.
Ruby developed a respectful companionship with the late Hunter Pratt Cole of Salisbury, NC that endured for more than 40 years. He was a loving and decent person and he preceded her into the life beyond this life in January 2007.
Although she attended many different churches in New York City from time to time, she never joined a church until she felt a compelling need to worship with her daughters Cindy and Linda who were among the founding members of Cosmopolitan Church of the Lord Jesus in the Bronx, New York. Being led by the Spirit, she joined Cosmopolitan under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Robert Lewis Foley, Sr., and faithfully served there until she eventually moved back to Virginia.
Her only grandchild, Robert Brandon Edwards, was born in April 1988. He became the subject and the source of her enduring happiness, and she became for him an abiding source of love, discipline and encouragement that will never fade away.
In 2003, Ruby decided she needed to be closer to her mother Addie whose health had begun to fail. She, therefore, returned to Spotsylvania and gave the best of herself and her service, until her mother bade this world farewell. Since she had made up her mind to remain in Virginia, Ruby reunited with the Second New Hope Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Charles Hilliard.
Just being in Ruby’s presence was a special joy. She treated everyone so lovingly, and so graciously. To have dinner in her home was likewise a special treat. It pleased her beyond words of description to prepare the meal, to dress her table and feed everyone as if they were royalty.
A few days ago, our Heavenly Father took notice that Ruby, was getting very tired and weary from her valiant struggle with an unyielding illness, and on May 3rd 2010, God called out to her to come to Bright Glory where she was welcomed into the Haven of Rest.
She leaves to celebrate her home going and to cherish so many precious memories, her two daughters, Cindy (Fredericksburg, VA); Linda (New York, NY); one sister, Barbara Rollins (Milford, VA); one son-in-law, Charles Dancy (New York, NY); one grandson, Robert Edwards (New York, NY); and two nieces – Tonya Harris (Boston, MA); and Traci Lewis (Atlanta, GA); one godson, Daryl Sanders (Charleston, SC); two faithful childhood friends, namely; Sarah Rollins, who departed this life the day before Ruby on May 2, 2010, and Helen Walker; also a beloved cousin Julius Child, and a significant number of additional beloved family members, personal friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, and three little girls namely, Johnnell Carr, Johnasia Carr and Jazmyn Vaneer all of New York whom Ruby lovingly embraced as her grand Goddaughters.
