Deaconess Robinette Fortune Young was born on August 12, 1913 to the late Deacon and Deaconess Daniel and Robinette Fortune of Caroline County, Virginia. She was the fourth of eight children who grew up participating in several church ministries at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Supply, Virginia. She was married to the late Rev. Dr. William Amos Young, Sr. for forty-one years and was the mother of ten children. She served as first lady of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Hustle, Virginia, and First Baptist Church, Hockley, Virginia for forty-one years. She also served as First Lady of Angel Visit Baptist Church, Dunnsville, Virginia for forty years. Deaconess Young was a committed church worker. Over the years she was involved with several church ministries. She enjoyed working with the Deaconess and Trustee Boards. Deaconess Young had a strong passion for Sunday School and served as secretary for many years. She enjoyed working with God's precious little children as a youth sponsor. She also served as secretary of the Missionary Society and was very active in the Flower Ministry.
Deaconess Young's favorite part of the Bible was from the Old Testament because of its phrasing. Her favorite Bible verses are Psalm 121, verses 1 and 2: "I lift up my eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth."
Deaconess Young enjoyed her flower garden, meeting new people, solving word search puzzles, cooking and sewing. She acknowledged that she couldn't do all that she used to do but continued to be as active as she could. Her favorite quote was: "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Deaconess Young had many favorites: Her favorite songs were "Amazing Grace" and "I come to the Garden Alone"; her favorite flower was Rose of Sharon and her favorite season was all of them, "I take them as they come".
Deaconess Young was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Dr. William Amos Young, Sr., children, Rev. William A. Young, Jr., Wilhelmina Fennell, Josephine Richardson and Esther Scott, her three brothers, Leonard, Daniel and Oliver Fortune and four sisters, Annie Young, Lucy Coleman, Ida Bailey and Mary Latney.
Deaconess Young leaves to carry on the fond memories of her life: Leonidas Young (Cora), Theodore Young, Ruby Chestnut (Taylor), Patricia Wright (Delaney), Herman Young (Soc) and Denyce Jones (Amos); twenty-three grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, thirteen great-great grandchildren, a devoted cousin, Mary Jeter, one sister-in-law, Gladys Fortune, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her devoted caregivers, Mary Gaines, Cordelia Myers, Cheryl Studvent and Odessa Byrd.
