Daisey Carter Braxton was born in Shumansville, Virginia on June 27, 1922 to the late Deacon Preston Carter and Carrie Lee Carter. Daisey was the eldest of eight children, six of whom have preceded her in death, Mattie Brittingham, Martha Thompson, William Carter, Clarence Carter, Mary Carter and Ruby D. Hayes.
Daisey confessed her love of Christ and joined the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church at an early age. This was the first step in her journey to being “On the Battlefield for My Lord”.
Daisey attended the Shumansville School. After completing her primary education she moved to Conshohocken, PA where she lived with an aunt and finished her education. It was then that she realized she had an interest in providing health care to others. Before pursuing her career goals Daisey returned to Virginia to be united in Holy Matrimony to the late Nathan Braxton, on April 6, 1939. This union was blessed with five daughters, Victoria, Angela, Linda, Florence and Lisa.
Having been in Philadelphia for a few years Daisey began to raise not only her family, but an extended family. She brought many of her siblings, their spouses, her cousins and friends to her home where she helped them to get started on their career paths. This is when the nick-name “Mama Daisey” was born. Daisey was a surrogate mother to many people in many ways.
After years of raising her family and providing care to others, Daisey felt that there was something still missing from her life. She was a very active member in her church. She was a missionary, the first woman to serve on the Trustee Board of one the largest churches in Philadelphia and later a Deaconess. She then heard the call of the Lord. In 1970 she accepted her calling into the gospel ministry and was licensed to preach by the late Rev. Dr. E.L. Jones. Several years later she was ordained by the late Rev. Dr. Harold O. Davis of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA. Once Rev. Braxton put on the full armor of God she furthered her ministry by helping her sisters in Christ. She did this by Founding and serving as the life-long President of the Women’s Ministers Conference of Philadelphia and Vicinity. This conference later expanded to include the state of Virginia and all ministers. Rev. Braxton continued her education in the ministry by attending Dropsie University, Philadelphia, PA, Eastern Baptist Seminary, Lancaster, PA, and later receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degree from the Amity Bible College of Los Angeles, CA.
Rev. Dr. Daisey Braxton then put all of her faith and training into becoming the Founder and Pastor of the 63rd Street Baptist Church. Under her pastoral leadership and conference guidance she shepherded many women and men into the salvation of Christ and the ministry.
Following the death of her husband, Rev. Dr. Daisey Braxton left Philadelphia and returned to her hometown of Bowling Green, VA. She continued her ministry by serving as the Assistant Pastor to the late Rev. Dr. E.L. Jones and the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Upon the home going of Rev. Dr. E.L. Jones she retired her position as Asst. Pastor and served her church as an Associate Minister.
Over the course of her years serving and worshipping at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Rev. Braxton once again donned her nick-name “Mama Daisey”. She was a mother figure, a source of inspiration, an influence and a cheerleader to many of her church family. Melvin and Vanessa Wright, Rev. Christopher and Mrs. Diane Stevens, Gertie Bowman, Devron(Boo) Carter and Rev. Cynthia Golden are a few of the very special people who had taken to calling her “Mama Daisey” and whom she regarded as children of her own.
Rev. Dr. Daisey Braxton leaves to cherish her loving memory, five loving and devoted daughters, Victoria M. Bonaparte (Sylvester), Angela D. Braxton (Lee), Linda L. Samuel (George), Florence R. Howard (Lawrence) and Rev. Lisa Stringfellow (James). Fifteen grandchildren, Rayvon, Sherry, Francoise, Susan, Timothy(deceased), Ernest(deceased), Calvin, Gloria, Derrick, Candice, Joi, Shannon, Treyvon(Daisey’s special boy), Jasmine and Asia. Also many great-grand and great-great-grandchildren one sister, Lottie F. Johnson, a host of nieces and nephews with special mention of LaVerne S. Jenkins, Carter T. Hayes, Wade P. Hayes and Marcus L. Hayes, and many other loving relatives, church members and friends.
