Rachel Ellen Harvey was born Rachel Ellen Meade in Biscoe, Virginia on June 13th, 1930. Born to loving parents, James Belvin Meade and Ellen Meade, she was the third of six children. At an early age she showed an affinity for mathematics and numbers, graduating from King and Queen Training School at age 16. She found her first church family at Bethlehem Baptist Church and in her later years she joined The First Mount Olive Baptist Church, where she remained a member until her passing.
Rachel was joined in holy matrimony to Watson R. Harvey Jr. in 1949. From that union, one daughter and three sons were born. Rachel Harvey was a notoriously hard worker, known for her dedication. She spent 13 years with VEPCO, followed by an 8 year position at Miller and Rhodes Department Store. At age 48 she enrolled in Smithfield Massey Business School, graduating in 2 years with an A average and on the Dean's List. After graduation, she secured a position with the State of Virginia, where she spent the next 22 years before retirement. She rounded out her career by working part-time at 7Eleven until falling ill at 81 years old.
While at First Mount Olive Baptist Church, she was a member of the Pastors Aide, she enjoyed the senior ministry, and developed treasured friendships within the community. All affectionately knew her as Rachel, including her children and to those lucky enough to really know her, she was dependable, hilarious, and a life-long friend. Her memory will be forever cherished by her children Guanda of Washington, DC; Donald (Reavie) of Temple Hills, MD; and Macdean of Richmond, VA; grandchildren Wavely, Keisha, Raushaad, Natasha, and Carisha; great-grandchildren Kamryn, Sydney, Emiko, Blaize, Cassidy, and Titan; two sisters Annie Johnson and Naomi Harvey; brother James (Lola) Meade; sister-in-law Lavina Braxton; and a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins, an
