Percell M Johnson

Percell McKinley Johnson, devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend departed this life Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Maryland. Percell was born in King and Queen County, Virginia on September 6, 1939 to the late Hugh and Lizzie Johnson. He was the youngest of 11 children: Albert, Fred, Dorothy, Robert, Clayton, Mary, George, Virginia, Maude, and Craddock, all of whom preceded him in death. Percell attended King and Queen County public schools and at an early age, he joined Jerusalem Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful member until his health began to fail.

On November 19, 1961, Percell was united in Holy Matrimony to Joan B. Pollard. Of this union, two children were born: Percell Jr. and Vanessa.

Percell and Joan moved to Washington, DC in 1965 where he was immediately employed by Excavation Construction Company from 1965 to 1979 and his coworkers thought the world of him. From there, he gained employment with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and in 2003, retired after 25 years of dedicated service.

Percell was an exceptional man who always was willing to help anyone in need. Many who called on him did so because they knew he was knowledgeable and an all-around handy man…the kind that knew what he was doing! After retirement, his favorite way to pass time was spending invaluable moment's playing cards with his grandchildren and playing with his great-grandson whom he affectionally called his "little man."

Percell leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Joan; one daughter, Vanessa Black (Dino); two granddaughters, Ashley and Alexis; one great grandson, Aiden; his son, Percell Jr, preceded him in death. Among those who will share fond memories are two brothers-in-law; James Pollard (Ruther Glen), James Hill (Washington, DC); 3 sisters-in-laws, Teresa Perkins and Mildred Johnson of Newtown, VA, Annie Johnson of Glasboro, New Jersey, and a host of special nieces, nephews and friends.
