Noland Harris was born on August 4, 1947 in Washington, DC to the late Wallace and Mary Harris. He was one of six children. On the morning of October 6, 2023 with his beloved wife and bonus son by his side, he peacefully earned his wings and ascended to heaven. At an early age, Noland accepted Christ and was baptized.
Noland attended public schools in Washington, DC. After leaving high school, he enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 where he served his country honorably for over three years. After graduating from basic training at the Keel US Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois in 1964, he started his tour of duty in Hawaii. He shared stories with his family about the time he spent on the USS Sacramento during the Vietnam War. When he returned home from the Navy, he worked for PEPCO as an electrical trainee. After PEPCO, Noland enrolled in and graduated from the Washington Police Academy. He was a graduating member of the Recruit Class 202C - September 11, 1969. As a Washington Police Officer, he worked at the White House and was the youngest police officer at that time. Noland then began his career at the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). He started out as a bus driver and was promoted to the rail system as a station manager at Shady Grove. Noland retired from WMATA after working for over 30 years. Noland enjoyed playing billiards (pool) with his father and brothers. He loved fishing, boating, and playing poker with his in-laws. Even during his illness, he won several hands of poker and did not hesitate to take Keda, Tony, and Toni’s chips.
Noland met Faith West and together they were blessed with their son, Duane Harris.
Noland met the love of his life, Hazel Harris in 1984. He was Hazel’s husband and yet her best friend. After a long courtship, the two married on August 4, 2006. Noland chose that date so that he would never forget their anniversary (it is also his birthday). They were faithful companions for 39 years.
Noland was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Harris Sr.; his mother, Mary Harris; his brother Wallace Harris, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Robert Mitchell (Elinder).
Noland leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Hazel ; son, Duane Harris; bonus daughter, Ramonda (Eric) Pollard; bonus son, Raymond Brooks, Jr.; grandson, Dylan Harris; granddaughter, Peiton Harris; bonus granddaughter, Sadia Pollard; bonus grandsons Sadat Pollard and Asad Brooks; sister, Elinder Mitchell; brothers Roland Harris, Kimball Harris, and Kelly Harris; four brothers-in-law, Farrish (Birmah) Purce, Sr., Michael Purce, Tony White, Demetrius Henry, Sr.; six sisters-in-law, Mary Harris, Reesa Harris, Dorothy Purce-Ball, Toni White, Pambla Henry, Tywanda Weldon, and Chiquita Smallwood; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
