Muriel B Fitzhugh

Muriel Johnson Fitzhugh affectionately known as "Mero" was born in Baynesville, VA on September 16, 1917 to the late Joseph S. and Lucy A. Johnson, She was the eighth and last child born into this union and is the last member of the family to depart this earth on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. The family suffered the loss of their home in Westmoreland County and moved to King George County in the early 1920's. The younger Johnson children were educated at the Fredericksburg Normal Industrial Institute in the Mayfield area of Fredericksburg, VA. Muriel completed cosmetology training and became a licensed beautician working out of the family home until her health dictated an early retirement. Simultaneously, she was also employed as a school bus driver for King George Public Schools for over 30 years. She also was employed as a short-order cook for several years and most recently was employed as a newspaper carrier for The Free Lance-Star well into her eighties, delivering the newspaper between 12 midnight and 6:00 AM when it became an early morning edition.

Muriel's first marriage to Webster Burnett ended in divorce. Muriel was predeceased by her second husband, Willie M. Fitzhugh, and is survived by four children; Willnette Fitzhugh-Williams of Spotsylvania, Robert N. Burnett Sr., of New Jersey, Joseph R. Burnett, Sr., of Colonial Beach, and William M. Fitzhugh of Spotsylvania. Survivors also include numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
