Mattie M. Ely-Coleman was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia; October 7, 1922 to the late Henry and Bessie Ely. She was the third of ten children. She confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and joined the Second New Hope Baptist Church, Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

Mattie departed this life on June 13, 2018 at Fredericksburg Health and Rehab Center.

Mattie united in holy matrimony to the Late James Seymour Coleman, and together they raised two sons.

Mattie was preceded in death by three brothers Clarence, Lewis, and Alvin Ely; and four sisters Arlene Merrick, Mary Hudson, Lillian Walker, and Dorothy Parker.

Mattie was a loving, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, and Friend. She was still funny and feisty at 95 years young. She Loved reading her Bible and eating her Hershey’s Kisses Chocolate Candy. Mattie leaves to honor her life and cherish her memory, her sons James Coleman and John Coleman; Her stepson James Coleman; Two Grandchildren; Two sisters, Helen Walker, and Gertrude Pratt; And a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
