Mary Russ

Mary "Mattielene" Russ, daughter of the late Jessie G. Russ and Nannie H. Washington Russ, was born June 5, 1943 in King and Queen County Virginia. She quietly departed this life on March 5, 2016 at home in Newtown Virginia.

Our sister attended the King & Queen County public schools, graduating from Central High School in 1963.

She joined First Mount Olive Baptist Church at an early age where she served as an usher for many years. She attended there until her health failed.

Mary worked at M & B headwear for many years as a machine operator. She also was a member on the volunteer Rescue Squad. Later she worked providing home care until she was unable to do so.

Mary loved sewing, fellowshipping with the seniors, loved her food, and enjoying herself with family and friends. She loved to "laugh" and keep you laughing. She was admired by many for her laughter and joking.


She was preceded in death by here father Jessie Russ, mother Nannie Russ, two brothers Justice and Andrew Russ and one sister Kate Johnson.

Mary leaves to cherish her memories four sisters, Lealie Russ of Newtown Va, Rebecca Dabney (Dennis) of Richmond Va. Gloria Russ of Bowling Green Va and Irene Smith of Philadelphia Pa. One brother Mervin Russ of Philadelphia Pa. Five nephews, nine nieces, seven great nephews and one great niece. A host of cousins, family and friends.

Also a very close cousin, devoted lifetime friend, who was always there to love and help, Annie Thompson. Another close friend and neighbor who was there for her, Mary Deyo. Three devoted cousins and friends, John Harvey, Rosa Newbill and Florence Vessels who were there as well. A devoted caregiver and cousin who took good care of her, Vanessa Johnson. Along with her neighbor Wallace Deyo Jr. who was always around to assist where he could.
