Mary L Travers

Mary Lola Black, daughter of the late Robert Jerome and Bertha Lil Black, was born on February 5, 1925 in
Westmorland County, Virginia. On February 13, 2016, after a lengthy illness, she transitioned from her earthly life at Oakview Rehab and Nursing Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Mary was a twin and one of six children: Julia, Julian, Joseph (her twin), Bertha, and Clarence, all of whom preceded her in death. Mary accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. She was raised and educated in the public school system of Washington DC.

Mary married the love of her life, the late Joseph Isiah Travers, Sr. on May 4, 1942. God blessed this union with two children, Joseph Jr. and Delores.
Mary joined Upper Room Baptist Church in 1958 and remained a faithful member until relocating to Westmoreland County. While at Upper Room, she was a member of the gospel chorus and the Berkeley Choraleers, which was the pastor's travelling choir. In 1969, she and her husband moved to Westmoreland County, Virginia. She transferred her church
membership to Grant Hill Baptist Church in Leedstown, Virginia where she was instrumental in establishing a gospel chorus.
As she aged, she joined Little Zion Baptist Church in Oak Grove, Virginia, which was closer to her home.
Mary worked briefly for the Federal Government at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She later began working for the Army and Air Force Exchange (AAFES) at Bolling Air Force Base and then transferred to Andrews Air Force Base where she remained until she retired.
Mary became a certified licensed beautician after graduating from Poro Beauty Academy in Washington DC. She had a passion for doing hair and could lock a curl that lasted for weeks. Mary was a very friendly and outgoing person who loved her family and enjoyed sharing stories about them to anyone who would listen. Her bubbly personality enabled her to meet
strangers who didn't remain strangers for long because she could talk from sun up to sun down. Mary also enjoyed cooking and was famous for baking her homemade cakes and pies.
Mary returned to DC in 2012 due to declining health and lived with her daughter until requiring hospitalization.
