Today our hearts are saddened with the passing of Mary "Sis" Lindsey Fortune into the spirit world. Mary was born on February 18, 1944, the daughter of the late Mary Jane Bundy and Julius Lindsey. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, James and Gene Lindsey. Over the past two years, Mary had suffered declining health due to numerous stroke events but showed enormous strength and courage during her battle. Her family and friends were there to support her throughout it all. On December 18, 2013 the Creator ended her struggle and called her to heaven.
Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. Nothing would make her face light up more than talking about her special grandson, Justin. She cherished time spent with family during holidays and special occasions.
In her middle years, Mary actively embraced her Native American heritage by teaching her daughters customs, dances, and craft of her ancestors. She participated in cultural events, traveling locally and internationally with the Rising Water
Dancers and Falling Water Drum Group. She was "Mom" to many others and her was refered to them proudly as "her kids".
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Fortune, Chance, Va. one son, Thomas R. Lindsey, Richmond, Va. three daughters, Jane E. Fortune, Centreville, Va., Dorothy L. Gray(Schirra), Indian Head, Md., and Helene F. Rice, Walkerton, Va, one grandson, Justin D. Gray, Indian Head, Md. and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
