Mary Ellen Sayles died peacefully on September 1, 2015 at the Bowling Green Health and Rehabilitation Center. Ellen as she was affectionately known was born in Rappahannock Academy, VA January 11, 1932 to the late Rachel Holmes and reared by the late Bernard White and Ethel Carter White. She was educated in the public schools of Essex County. She joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church at an early age and for many years served on the Usher's Ministry, Nurse's Ministry, and served as the president of the Culinary Ministry . She was united in Holy Matrimony to William Sayles out of this union ten children were born. She was employed by Whites Packing Company retiring in 1998 with 35 years of service.
Ellen was a beloved member of her community known for her rice puddings, and sweet potato pies. She loved to help and give to others and asked for nothing in return. She had a love for children and took great pride in not only raising her own children but other family member's children as well. Her thoughtfulness and love for others was truly unmeasurable. She always held a special place in her heart for Reverend Charles Johnson and Elna Johnson. She enjoyed watching her stories as she called them and westerns. She was preceded in death by her husband William Sayles and daughter Robin Sayles.
Ellen is survived by her loving and devoted children six sons William Sayles of Partlow, VA, Franklin (Susan) Sayles of Spotsylvania VA, James Sayles of Supply, VA, Michael (Diane) Sayles of King George, VA, Robert Sayles and Neal Sayles of Supply VA three daughters Virginia McDowney of Colonial Beach, VA, Penny Johnson of Warsaw VA, and Angela (Dwayne) Washington of Loretto, VA. Godchildren Antonio Kenny of Caret, VA, Donald Payton of Supply, VA, Pamela Carter of Temple Hills, MD, and Karen Stephenson of Fredericksburg, VA, eleven grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Special Friends Ann Cole, Lilliemae Tate, Pearl Corbin, Patricia Young, Doris Fortune, and Diane Jackson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
