Sister Mary E. Mayer, affectionally know as Miss Sunshine, was born Mary Elizabeth Vaughan to the late Walter and Elizabeth Vaughan on March 21, 1924, in Caroline County Virginia. She was a graduate of the Commonwealth of Virginia School system. At a young age she was baptized in the Rappahannock River and became a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Royal Virginia. After graduating High School, Mary took residence in New Jersey and became a faithful and dedicated member of Second Baptist Church in Roselle, New Jersey. While in NJ, she was initiated into the Star of Bethlehem Chapter No. 26 OES PH.A. (Eastern Star). Served as Worthy Matron, a member of Charity and Sick committee, School of Instruction, Penta Club, First Aid Club, Ways and Means Committee and served as treasurer.
While in NJ, Mary met the love of her life, Havard “Haywood” Mayer and was join in Marriage on December 7, 1963. To this union Mary gain six wonderful stepchildren and one daughter. Which she loved and adored them all.
Mary returned to King George County in 1968 and has resided here ever since. Mary worked faithfully in the community with the Fall Festival Committee, Ruritans Club, and King George NAACP until age finally slowed her down. Upon returning to King George Mary join Antioch Baptist Church and faithfully served, worship, and praised God at the church on the Senior Choir, Kitchen Club, the scholarship Committee, Women’s Ministry and the Missionary Society.
Mary’s sunshine spirit and smile was with her until she departed this life on December 24, 2021 at 8.01 pm at Mary Washington Hospital Fredericksburg, VA. She was proceeded in death by her Husband Haywood Mayer, her four stepsons, Haywood Sr, Timothy, Gary, and George; her siblings, Earnest Vaughan, Lucille Weeks, and James Vaughan.
She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life her daughter, LaVerne Mayer, stepdaughter, Ruth Mayer-Martin (Walter) and stepson Edward Mayer, three step daughter-in-law’s, Marion Mayer, Jennette Mayer, and Barbara Mayer. One Sister, Pauline Adams and one sister-in-law Rose Vaughan. One granddaughter, Morgan Yarborough, 14 step grandchildren, 13 step great grandchildren and 1 step great great grandchild. Three God daughters, Rosetta Mason (Kelvin), Lillian Jackson, and Cassandra Lee (James). A special thank you to her step granddaughter Selene Mayer (Jackie) for the last two years spending those special times with her. And a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and special friends that have all spent special times with dear Aunt Mary.
