Mary was born January 9, 1932 and went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 19, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Melvin and Emily Fortune Johnson of Caroline County, VA.
Mary received her formal education from the public schools of Caroline County. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Ebenezer Baptist church in Supply, VA. Mary married the late James Brown of Fredericksburg, VA and to this union six children were born. She also raised two grandsons and two great-grandsons in her home.
To everyone who knew her she was known as "MOM". Mary retired from Allman's BBQ after 51 years of service. She was the backbone and beloved member of the Allman's family. Many patrons came to see her smiling and welcoming face. Mary put her heart and soul into the meals she prepared during her 51 years there. Mary appeared in the Freelance Star and even on the local news due to her remarkable service at Allman's BBQ. She often referred to herself as being famous due to her local fame.
Mary loved to cook and if you came through the doors of her home she definitely was going to fill your belly with a home cooked meal. She was known for her famous pound cakes and her delicious potato salad. She enjoyed sitting on the porch with her beloved husband. She also loved gardening and spending time with her family and friends.
She helped everyone who crossed her path who had a need for help. Family and friends were always welcome to feast at her dinner table. She loved her husband and children; she will be missed a great deal and her family will continue to remember her as one of the hardest working women they ever knew.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband James and two daughters, Lucille Pendleton and Francis Smith.
She is survived by three sons, Russell Brown of Fredericksburg, James Brown Jr. of Richmond, and Donald Brown of Fredericksburg, one daughter, Roxanne Brown of Stafford, one brother, James Johnson (Gene) of Port Royal, fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
