Marion M. Holmes

When the sun of life reaches its zenith with the brightness of a well-spent life, when the passing comes, we can only say that a beautiful life has ended. The beautiful life of Marion Miller Holmes, daughter of the late Wilson B. and Ella Maude Miller ended on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at the Bowling Green Health Care Center. She was born June 14, 1910 in Upper Zion, Virginia, a community that once existed on part of what now is Fort A. P. Hill.

Marion received her education at Free Mission Elementary School in Upper Zion, Virginia, Union High School, Milford, Virginia and Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia.

Her Christian journey began by uniting with the First Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She later joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she worked untiringly in many auxiliaries of the church.

She was united in marriage to the late Jesse Holmes on August 24, 1933 and they shared 50 years of happiness before his death. Although no children were born to this union, they reared their nephew, Samuel Courtney and were foster parents to many other children.

Marion never got tired of doing God's work. She loved to sing and loved people. She had a deep desire to do what was pleasing in God's sight. Her many years of service to God in her church and community were exemplified as she served on the Deaconess Board for 35 years, Missionary Society for 40 years, Senior Choir for 40 years and taught Sunday School for 25 years. She was District President for the Mattaponi Women's Convention and served in many other capacities when called upon.

Her community involvement included the Salvation Army, Board of Directors for the American Red Cross and was Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star Chapter #179, Prince Hall Affiliate of Tappahannock, Virginia.

Marion has been a source of encouragement to her family and to all who knew her. Her memory will be cherished by her foster son, Samuel Courtney of Temple Hills, Maryland; a devoted sister, Vergie Miller of Milford, VA; a brother, Theodore Miller of Fredericksburg, VA; 7 nieces, 10 nephews; many great nieces, nephews, cousins and two close friends, Cynthia Reynolds of Hustle, VA and Maggie James of Milford, VA; a devoted and loving nephew, Robert Miller, Jr.
