Margaret Rebecca Fortune

Margaret Rebecca Washington Fortune was born November 1, 1916 in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Coty and Daisy Washington. Her parents moved to Essex County when she was very young.

In 1936, she and Hamilton Fortune were married and to that union were born six children: Johnnie, Hamilton, Ruth, Amos, Herndon, and Garrett who preceded her in death.

Early in life, she became a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She served as a deaconess, missionary, and she and her husband, Hamilton, prepared communion for the church for many years.

Mrs. Fortune lived, and enjoyed 92 plus years of life with family and community.

She was a loving wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, and friend to her community. All will miss her and continue to remember her basket of beautiful fruit that runneth over!!

Margaret is survived by five children, one child, Herndon, Jr. who precede her in death, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
