Margaret Ellen Holmes-Robinson

Margaret Ellen Holmes-Robinson entered into eternal life on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at Southern Maryland Hospital. By God's grace and mercy, she experienced over eighty-five years of love, faith, strength, wisdom, labor, joy and pain. She would often be heard singing "Precious Lord". This was surely her favorite hymn.

Margaret was born in Caroline County, Virginia on July 26, 1926 to the late Ada Elizabeth Cook-Holmes and John Burnett Holmes, Sr. She was married to the late Peyton A. Robinson, Sr. She was a strict disciplinarian who enjoyed children and had ten of her own, four girls and six boys. With the unseemly death of her oldest daughter "Mary", she took in three grandchildren. She loved to see children eat until their stomachs were full. She would cook biscuits or cornbread daily and would faithfully have a pot of beans on the stove to share with anyone who popped in for a visit.

Margaret attended school in Caroline County for a short time as a young girl, but soon surrendered that period in life to become a wife and mother. She found special delight in canning and preserving all types of fresh fruit and vegetables. She was a true homemaker. Not only did she stay home to care for her own children, she also cared for the children of other family members, allowing them to work outside of the home.

Margaret gave her life to Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church at an early age and also encouraged all of her children to follow in her footsteps. She would send the children off to Sunday school every Sunday morning and she would join them later for Sunday Services. Many families lived within walking distance of the church, so walking together to and from church was the highlight of her Sundays.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: three daughters, Betty Ward (Ronald) of Clinton, Md., Alberta Robinson of Hyattsville, Md. and Edna Robinson of, D.C.; three sons Jackie Robinson of Fredericksburg, Va., Frank Robinson (Tauheedah) of Pennsauken, N.J., and Peyton A. Robinson, Jr. (Saundra) of Oxon Hill, Md.; four brothers, Robert Holmes (Joan), George Holmes, Frank Holmes (Mildred), Major Holmes (Juanita), all of King George, Va.; one brother-in-law David Robinson (Nora) of Wilmington, Del. eleven grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of neices, nephews, cousins, other relatives, special friends, and love ones.
