Mabel Esther Pryor Kee, affectionately known as "Mae," was born on May 22, 1930 in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania. She entered into eternal rest on February 25, 2016, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia, surrounded by her loved ones. A native of Owens, King George County, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. Pryor, Sr. and late Queen Esther Pryor. She was married to the late, James H. Davis. From this union God blessed them with four children, Charles (deceased), Clinton, Cynthia, and Wayne.
Mabel grew up in a religious home and was active in the program of the church all of her life. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized in the Potomac River in Virginia. She became a member of the Little Ark Baptist Church under the stewardship of Reverend George Carter. As a faithful member, she served in many capacities under Reverend John W. Chapman, Sr. Mabel was a member of the choir, Prayer Band, Baptist Training Union, and Treasurer of the choir.
Mabel moved to Camden, New Jersey in 1954. After visiting many churches, in search of a place where she could carry out the spirit of the covenant and the principles of God's word, she was led to Zion Baptist Church. It was here that she met the late, William L. Kee, Sr. After an extended courtship, they were married. However, from this union, there were no children.
Mabel was actively involved in the life of the church. She served as a member and President of the Willing Workers. She also worked faithfully as Vice President of the Usher Board, member of the Missionary Board, and member of the Graduate Club. In 1986, she served as Co-Chairlady for Women's Day. Mabel was Chairlady for Unity Day in 1987, 1991, and 1993. She took great pride in organizing and leading these celebrations, and she had a knack for securing sponsors and ads for the celebration booklets. In later years, Mabel joined Evergreen Baptist Church and attended as a faithful member until she became ill.
As a young woman, Mabel was employed at Moorestown Laundry, Campbell Soup Company, GSA and RCA. The last job she held was as a security guard for RCA. As a retiree, Mabel enjoyed going to her senior day center where she crocheted blankets for veterans. She enjoyed doing community service work. In 2012, she was the recipient of President Barack Obama's Volunteer Service Award for helping to address the needs of her community and country. Mabel was also bestowed the honor of American Gold Star Mother, a recognition given to mothers who have lost sons or daughters in war.
Mabel came back to her hometown of King George, Virginia in December 2015 so that her family could care for her during her illness. Even in illness, Mabel was strong-willed and knew exactly what she wanted.
Mabel will be remembered as a strong, independent woman with a fabulous sense of style. She loved to look good and took great pride in her appearance. Mabel loved to entertain in her home, and she was an outstanding cook. Her cookouts and holiday celebrations always drew many friends and loved ones to her home. Mabel also loved working outdoors in her flower and vegetable gardens. She loved the Lord and cherished every blessing He bestowed upon her.
Mabel leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Clinton Davis (Doris) of Brandywine, MD; a daughter Cynthia Davis-Bumbrey of King George, VA; a son, Wayne Davis of Fredericksburg, VA; seven grandchildren, Shana (Raymond), Aja, Letina, Charles (Trish), Chaz, Nakyia, and Shon (Jennifer); 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Corean Hodge and Margaret Johnson (Theodore) both of King George, VA; one brother, Augustus Pryor (Marty) of Manassas, VA: two sisters-in-law, Gladys Pryor and Winnie Bell Pryor both of King George, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
