Lessie M. Hayes

On Saturday, April 5, 2003, Mother Lessie M. Hayes (''Mama Lessie'') went home to be with the Lord. After an illness she entered into eternal rest at the Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was born November 24, 1911 in Westmoreland County Virginia to the late Spencer S. Jackson and Mariah Tolliver Jackson. She was one of nine children.She was educated in the Westmoreland County and Washington DC public school system. She joined the New Monrovia Baptist Church, Colonial Beach, Virginia at an early age, under Pastor G. E. Carter, and was a member until her passing.Lessie was united in Holy matrimony to the late Deacon Daniel Hayes, Jr. God blessed them with seven children: James, Rosa, Arnita, Walter, Dan Shirley, Robert Franklin, and Joyce. Lessie worked at different locations in the Colonial Beach area as cook house cleaner, at one time she rode the ferry boat across the Potomac to and from work to her various jobs in the Maryland and DC areas. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Dan Shirley Hayes, and Robert Franklin Hayes, Colonial Beach, VA; two daughters, Rosa Louise Hayes, Colonial Beach, VA and Joyce Mae Morris, King George, VA; loving sister-in-law, Ella Watts, Washington DC; two son-in-laws, Gilbert Morris, King George, VA, and Matthew Ashton, Colonial Beach, VA; daughter-in-law, Laura Hayes, Coloinal Beach, VA; 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
