Very quietly and peacefully on Friday, January 30, 2009, almighty God, in his infinite wisdom, mercy, and grace, called Leo Clemon Gaines to rest at Mary Washington Hospital, Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was born on November 1, 1941 to the late Leo Dorsey Gaines and Cora Fortune Gaines. He was preceded in death by a sister Charlotte Gaines and a brother, Maynard Gaines.
At an early age Clemon came to know the Lord Jesus Christ and accepted him as his personal savior and joined the Mount Olive Baptist Church, Hustle, VA. He also attended the Essex County Schools.
He was employed with the Washington Gas Light Company in Springfield, VA. as a mechanic and retired in 1996 after 36 years of service. Retirement did not keep him home very long before he went back to work for Chemical and Engineering in Fairfax, VA. until he became ill in 1998.
He will be remembered for providing van pool rides for many years to those who commuted to the VA/MD/DC areas. Also, he was well known for the time and tender loving care he put into keeping one of the best kept lawns and beautiful flowers in the area.
On April 3, 1999, he was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Mary Burrell Gaines.
He leaves to mourn with cherished memories, his beloved wife, Mary B. Gaines; a step-son, Brian Burrell, Hustle, VA; two daughters, Saundra Dabney and Genevia Dabney, Tappahanock, VA; three grand daughters, Fatima Dabney, Jasmine Campbell & Dayonna Johnson, of Tappahannock, VA; one grandson, Nicholas Dabney, of Tappahannock, VA.; one great-grand daughter, Maliyah Capri Towler Tappahannock, VA; three sisters. Arlene Howard, Rappahannock Academy, VA, Louise Braxton, Hustle, VA. and Alma Nelson, Tappahannock, VA.; two brothers, James Gaines, King George, VA. and William Gaines, Hustle, VA.; two sister-in-laws, Hampton Gaines of Hustle, VA and Alfreda Gaines of King George, VA. two brothers in laws, Douglas Braxton, Hustle, VA and William Nelson; Tappahannock, VA.; a mother-in-law, Mary J. Burrell, Tappahannock, VA; eight sisters-in-law; five brother-in-law; and host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Though his smile is gone forever and his hands we can not touch. We have many memories of the one we loved so much. His memory is our keepsake with which we'll never part. God has him in His keeping; we have him in our hearts.
Sorrowfully submitted;
The family
