I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
II Timothy 4:7
On February 26, 2005, Lenwood Harris was called from labor to reward. He was born to the late Lennie and Mary E. Harris on July 9, 1929 in Ruther Glen, Caroline County, Virginia. He was affectionately known to family and friends as “Knee”.
Lenwood attended Caroline County Public Schools. As a young man, he proudly served in the United States Marines and was honorably discharged in 1953 after several years in the Korean War conflict. At an early age, Lenwood accepted Christ and joined the St. Luke Baptist Church where he later renewed his commitment to his Lord and Savior as an adult. He was a man of faith, integrity, commitment and consistency.
Lenwood was married to Diane Woods Talbert on January 27, 1978. To this union, one child was born, Lenee’ Diana. To an earlier union, one child was born, Karen.
Lenwood worked for the District of Columbia Government for 25 years until he retired in 1980. Earlier in his career, he completed several undergraduate courses at the Carter Peters Business School in Washington, D.C. in business management. Following his retirement, he worked part-time for several years with the Asbury Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. Since 1958, he was a faithful brother of the Ionic Lodge No.17, F & AM, PHA, Washington, D.C. No matter where life took him, Lenwood’s heart remained in the Caroline County land he loved so well. When he was there, he was at home-gardening, taking care of his dogs, hunting, fishing and tinkering with his cars and plows. The one constant longing throughout his illness was his desire to once again be on his beloved Virginia soil. At any other destination, he was simply a sojourner regardless of how long he stayed.
Lenwood leaves to cherish his unparalleled memory, his loving wife, Diane; two daughters, Lenee’ and Karen; two stepsons, James T. Talbert, Sr. and David E. Talbert (Lyn, wife); seven grandchildren, infant granddaughter, Moriah Diana, (Lenee’, mother); Jerome, Michael, Amy, and Jeanette (Karen, mother); James T. Talbert II and Cedric. Talbert (James, father); two sister, Adell Scott of Maryland and Lucille Martin of Bowling Green, Virginia; one brother, Richard Harris, of Washington, D.C.; mother-in-law, Alice R. McPherson; brother-in-law, Thomas E. Woods; two sisters-in-law, Laura Harris and Wilhelmina Woods; aunt, Ellie Jefferson (Doug, husband); two aunts-in-law, Margaret Lewis and Mary Greene (Timothy, husband); a host of nieces; nephews and cousins, other relatives and friends.
O' dear, familiar yesterday!
O' sad and strange to-day
Yet who would call his glad soul back to rouse the resting clay?
Or who could wish that he might know our morrow's pain and strife
When Lenwood, who, once, so longed to live
-at last has entered life.--The family
