Layne A. Harper, Sr., son of the late Eddie and Pearl Harper was born December 2, 1951 in King George, Virginia. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 5:30 a.m. at Mary Washington Hospital after a long illness. He was a graduate of King George High School. Layne was an U. S. Army Veteran. At an early age he accepted Christ and joined Salem Baptist Church, Jersey. He was joined in holy matrimony to the former Roberta Shanklin of King George on August 9, 1985. From this union, two sons were born. He was employed at N.S.W.C. in Dahlgren for 19 years, as a Heavy Equipment Operator before retiring in 1998. Layne loved cooking,
hunting and spending quality time with his family. He was preceded in death by two brothers: James (J.D.) and Carlton Harper. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Roberta I. Shanklin-Harper; one daughter, Lavisha Davis of Washington, D.C.; three sons: Layne A. Harper, Jr., Lance A. Harper, Billy ''Pete'' Shanklin, all of King George, one grandson: Tyshaun Jones who affectionately called Layne ''PaPa''; one brother, Deacon Kenneth Harper of King George; and two sisters, Marie Hines of Rocky Mounty, North Carolina and Brenda Toliver of King George; mother-in-law: Elizabeth Whiting of King George; two sister-in-laws, Laverne Brooks and Christine Whiting, three brother-in-laws, Irving Whiting and Johnny Brooks, and James Toliver, all of King George; two God daughters, Keisha and Katrina Harvey;
four special friends, Kenneth Samuels (whom followed Layne's every command), Michael Bumbry, Robert ''Shinny'' Harvey, and Pete Vessels; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
