Josiah L. Bumbry

Deacon Josiah L. Bumbry, a life-long resident of King George and the third oldest son of the late Matthew L. and Beatrice Johnson Bumbry, was born in King George County on October 10, 1925.
At an early age, he joined the Little Ark Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Rev. George Carter. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Deacon Ministry and was a Sunday School teacher at Little Ark until his health failed.
Deacon Josiah was joined in holy matrimony to the former Estelle Whiting. From this union, they were blessed with one daughter, Annie. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rev. George Bumbry, Rev. Irving Bumbry, and Ventura Bumbry.
He was a graduate of the King George Training School and was called to serve in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946. He was employed as a Rigger at NSWC Dahlgren for 38 years before retiring in 1982. After retirement, he worked for five years at Potomac Elementary School, Dahlgren as a custodian, where he was loved and cherished by students, faculty, and parents. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys' fan.
Deacon Josiah was tall in statue, but even taller in his faith and belief in Jesus Christ. He possessed a certain anointing in his spirit. Whenever you were around him, you could feel the presence of God. His favorite scriptures were found in the first chapter of St. John.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Estelle Bumbry of King George, VA; daughter, Annie Dickinson of Irvington, NJ; two brothers, Rev. Matthew V. Bumbry of Owens, VA; and Russell Bumbry of Norristown, PA; three grandchildren, John Dickinson, Crystal Dickinson, and Tonia Dickinson; one great grandchild, Maya Pinkney; son-in-law, Charles P. Dickinson, Jr; nine sisters-in-law, Lena Bumbry, Deborah Bumbry, Irene Jefferson, Mary Jane Randolph, Gladys Pryor, Winnie Pryor, Dorothy Washington, Katherine McDowney, and Mabel Yancey, one brother-in-law, Willie George; nephews, nieces, and a host of cousins.

The Lord will direct your path if you yield your heart unto him. Happy is the life in which it has been done?
