God called his name and Joseph Leon Brooks quietly slipped away Thursday, December 23, 2021 at Spotsylvania Regional Hospital, Fredericksburg, VA.
Joseph, affectionately called “Jody” and “Joe,” was born on February 6, 1961 to the late Fannie and Freddie Brooks, Sr. Joe accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Supply, VA. Joe graduated from Caroline High School, Bowling Green, VA in 1980.
After graduating, Joe went on to work at numerous jobs including Ryan’s Homes, General Products and lastly, Walmart until he started developing health issues. Joe has a passion for fishing and going to the racetrack.
Joe was known for his kind, humble spirit. He has a love for people and bringing laughter to their souls. That was his gift in life. His love of life and huge personality made his presence unforgettable. You would always know when he was in a room.
Joe was a big family man. He truly loved spending time with his family and being spoiled by his three sisters. He was often teased “You don’t have to do anything; your sisters do it all for you.” But truth be told, those brothers spoiled him too. Jody enjoyed being loved and most importantly showing love. He had no problem telling you “he loved you.” He loved family gatherings with his two aunts, cousins, and friends. He would have the biggest smile in the room and kept his family laughing.
Jody was preceded in death by his parents, Fannie and Freddie Brooks, Sr., brother Walter Garnett, sister Mary Ollie Taylor, nephew Andre Brooks and great nephew CJ Carrington.
Left to carry on his legacy and fond memories are his two children, whom he loved dearly: Joseph L. Brooks, Jr. (Rita) and Danielle Brooks (Amp), both of Glen Allen, VA; four amazing grandchildren: Malia, Montrell, Lauren, and Aliyah Brooks, all of Glen Allen, VA; three sisters: Emma Wallace (Marvin), Fannie Woolfolk (David), and Gladys Johnson (Stanley); and three brothers: Freddie Brooks (Jackie), Lee Brooks (Regina), and Charles Wayne Brooks (Leslie). Jody has a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who were all very special to his heart. He was their “Uncle Joe Joe.” Jody also leaves two aunts, Mary Garnett and Esther Holmes, and a very special friend whom he loved Stephanie Lumpkin of King George, VA.
Joseph also has a lot of high school buddies that were very dear to his heart, too many to name. He loved running into them or talking to them on the phone. He really cherished those moments with each one of them. But he truly missed his best friend who preceded him in death, Marvin “Snakeman” Peatross.
God gave Jody the gift of joy, the gift of peace and the gift of love, and he definitely showed and expressed it everyday. Jody will not be remembered for how or why he died, but rather why and how he lived.
Seating will be limited total of 125 people max and face mask is required.
Funeral will be live streamed.
