James J. Johnson

James Jasper Johnson, Sr., the son of the late Carrie J. Dunlap, was born on December 27, 1916 in Washington, D.C. but was reared in Dahlgren, Virginia. He attended the Little Ark Trainig School. Jim worked as a rigger at the Naval Weapons Center for over 35 years. During his federal service and after retirement he continued Johnson Plumbing, which he founded and owned for over sixty years. A vocation he passed on to his son and grandson, James, Jr and Jeffrey.

James married the late Irma Harris. Eight children were born to this union. Later in life, he married Martha Allen and Naomi Allen, who also preceded him in death.

James joined the Little Ark Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Dr. John W. Chapman. ONe of his greatest pleasures in life was quietly attending each service and listening and enjoying God's spoken word and song. James always had a smile on his face, you could feel just how happy he was just being in the house of the Lord. As in life, always a smile.

"Daddy" as he was affectionately called by his children and "Pop-Pop" by his grandchildren, leaves a rich legacy to cherish his memory. His eight children, James J. Johnson, Jr.,(Phyllis), Thelma L. Cooper, Ralph L. Johnson(Romaine), Theordore R. Johnson(Carol), Leroy N. Johnson(Virginia), Lois E. Harley, a devoted caregiver and constant companion(Leon), Charles E. Johnson, and Alonzo O. Johnson(Kim); an adopted daughter, Ashley L. Johnson; 41 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; He is also survived by nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law; and a host of cousins and friends.
