James Edward Vaughan entered into eternal rest on March 19, 2021 at his home with his wife, Rosie Vaughan by his side and his stepdaughter Rev. Yolanda Giles holding hands.
James was born on September 10, 1931 in Brandywine, VAlocated in Caroline County to the late Walter and Elizabeth Vaughan. He graduated from the King George Training School in Edgehill, VA in 1950 which was later named Ralph Bunch High School.
He accepted Christ at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church, Port Royal, VA then later the Vaughan family moved to King George, VA and he united with the Antioch Baptist Church in King George, VA. He was a supportive member until his death.
James was a Mason Emeritus member of the Masonic Lodge No. 314 in King George, VA. He had a passion for cars and trucks and owned a few. He also had a passion for growing flowers, especially the Zinnia flower. He was also a sporty dresser and his attire was always looking good.
He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and served in the Korean War as part of the United Nation’s Police Action. He received an honorable discharge in 1960.
In 1955, James was joined in holy matrimony to Phyllis Williams and to this union was born one son, Erskine. That marriage ended in divorce. In 1980 he was joined in Holy Matrimony to Rosie Johnson Fortune.
James worked at the Naval Service Weapons Center in Dahlgren, VA as a Heavy Equipment Operator. He received many outstanding ratings and accomplishments attested to his high quality of service. In 1988 he retired with 30 years of civilian service. After retiring he worked as a full-time truck driver for Richard Lomax in King George, VA. He also groomed and mowed lawns for his family and his church, Antioch Baptist Church which he loved. He was never complacent but always felt a need to help somebody.
Two siblings preceded him in death: Sister, Lucille Weeks (King George, VA) as well as his only brother Ernest Vaughan (a/k/a Buck) (Plainfield, NJ).
James is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years and caregiver Rosie; son, Erskine Vaughan, step-daughter Rev. Yolanda Giles (Robert), Alexandria, VA; step-sons Ira Fortune (Emily), Killeen, TX and Oliver Fortune, Jr., Baltimore, MD; sisters Mary Mayer and Pauline Adams, King George, VA and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
