James Byrd Brown son of the late Matilda M. and Willie E. Brown was born January 7, 1928 in Caroline County Virginia. James slipped away peacefully on September 5, 2013 at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center, Fredericksburg, Virginia.
He received his education in the Public School System in Caroline County.
James was united in holy matrimony to Mary Elizabeth Johnson of Fredericksburg, Virginia. From this union six children were born; he also raised two grandsons and two great-grandsons in his home.
To his family "Shorty" as he was known worked as a Foreman for the General Paving Company. He also worked for the Branscome Company as a Superintendent for a total of 40 years in the construction business.
James had a remarkable sense of humor and loved to laugh. Some of his favorite sports were baseball, football and tennis but he enjoyed the most World Wide Wrestling Federation. James was a real true gentleman. He loved his wife and children; he will be missed a great deal and his family will continue to love him as one of the Greatest Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather that ever lived.
James was preceded in death by two daughters, Lucille Pendleton and Francis Smith.
He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Mary Brown, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; one daughter, Roxanne Brown of Stafford, Virginia; three sons, Russell, James, Jr., and Donald Brown all of Fredericksburg, Virginia; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, two sisters, Nancy Myers (Arthur), Ann Cole (William); three brothers, Richard Brown, John Brown (Helen), and Charles Brown (Virginia) all of Rappahannock Academy, Virginia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
