James A. Coleman

James Albert Coleman, born February 7, 1931, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 19, 2010. James, affectionately known as Nook, was the son of the late William Self and Mary Jane Coleman, of Westmoreland County, VA.

Nook accepted Christ at and early age and joined the Grants Hill Baptist Church. He later transferred his membership to the Little Zion Baptist Church where he served faithfully until his health began to decline.

Nook attended the Westmoreland County Public Schools and later went on to receive his GED at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, in Dahlgren, VA, where he was employed. He retired after 29 years of loyal and dedicated service as an Ordnance Equipment Mechanic in the 'Terminal Effects Branch' which later became the 'Explosion Dynamics Branch'. He also served our country for two years in the United States Army.

He was well known for his skills and handy work. Once the frame had been set up, he completed the entire construction of his home himself. Nook was called the handy man, known for his love to garden and fish. He was also a giving person who would often share the produce from his garden with family and friends.

Nook was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life Alice Lee Ferguson, and to this union four children were born.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister, Catherine Self; three brothers, Edward Self, Lloyd Self and Robert Self.

Nook leaves to cherish his loving memories, a loving wife, Alice Lee Self of Colonial Beach VA, two sons, Ronnie Coleman of Charlotte, NC, and Gerald Coleman of Fort Mills, SC.; two daughters, Dorothy Coleman and Mary Jane Coleman of Spotsylvania, VA. Fourteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; four sisters, Margaret Spencer, Annie Coleman, Ester Brown (Russell), Mary Jane Savoy (Henry) all of Maryland; three brothers, James Cornellious, Jeffrey Cornellious and Albert Cornellious of (???); one sister-in-law, Etta Self of Colonial Beach, VA and a host of other relatives and friends.
