Irene Ruth Whiting Jefferson

Irene Ruth Whiting Jefferson was born on December 29, 1923 in Caroline County, Virginia to the late Spencer and Ruth Whiting. Irene departed this life peacefully on Thursday, December 25, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.

Irene attended public school in Caroline, Virginia. She accepted her Lord and Savior and joined Salem Baptist Church. Irene served as an usher for many years and participated in other church activities as well. Irene later in her Christian journey transitioned to the Restoration Worship Center.

She was married to the late Wilson T. Jefferson for 66 years and from this bond, God blessed them with six sons and three daughters.

Irene was preceded in death by one daughter: Mertine Whiting, six siblings: Mary Randolph, Helen Johnson, Estelle Bumbry, Catherine McDowney, Willie Whiting, and Spencer Whiting and one granddaughter, Angela Peyton.

As the matriarch of her family, Irene exemplified genuine godly love by example. Although a quiet spirit, Irene was quick-witted and loved to laugh. She had a contagious smile and left a lasting impression on anyone who met her. Irene had a great passion for the Lord, devoting much of her time reading, learning, and studying the Word. She enjoyed weekly Bible study with her sons and always looked forward to family gatherings. Irene loved reflecting on the "good old days", playing dominoes, daytrips, visiting or talking on the telephone with her sisters.

Irene leaves to cherish her loving memories: six sons, Kelly (Ernestine), Wilson (Barbara), Oliver (Brenda), Stanley (Adrian), Harold (Pamela), Darrell, three daughters, Marva (Hugh), Julia (Pastor Perry), and Phyllis (Willie); four sisters, Gladys Pryor, Winnie B. Pryor, Dorothy Washington, and Mabel Yancey, 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Lloyd Washington Jr., four sisters-in-law, Iantha Smith, Elizabeth Whiting, Shirley Whiting, Blanche Jefferson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends—Deacon Perry and Mary Scranage, Sr.
