It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ira V. West, a devoted father, grandfather, mentor, veteran, mathematician, athlete, and leader, who left this world on October 20, 2024, surrounded by love and faith. Ira was born in Glen Allen, VA, and raised in Richmond, VA, the beloved son of Leroy and Blanche West. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he demonstrated his unwavering commitment to service.
Ira earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Virginia Union University and went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. He began his career in 1955 at the Naval Proving Ground, now known as Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, where he made history as the second Black male scientist to be hired. Over 35 dedicated years, Ira contributed to the Navy's first strategic weapon system and played a pivotal role in the Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile Program, overseeing the development of critical software systems in exterior ballistics, geoballistics, and anti-submarine warfare.
A community leader, Ira joined the Dahlgren Lion’s Club in 1975, serving King George County with passion and commitment, ultimately rising to the position of President. He represented King George on RADCO (now GWRC) for 6 years. Ira also dedicated eleven years to the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board, representing King George County with integrity and grace. West was a member of the Gideon’s organization and spent his free time evangelizing the word of God with his wife.
Ira was not only a trailblazer in his professional life but also a beacon of faith and inspiration to those around him. His favorite Bible verse, John 3:16, guided his life: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” His steadfast belief in God’s promises fuelled his resilience and compassion.
He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength and courage, inspiring all who had the privilege to know him. While many icons receive public recognition, Ira’s true heroism lay in his selflessness and the battles he fought for our country and community without complaint. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Ira was preceded in death by his Mother and Father and his brother, Dr. Roy A West. He currently is survived by his faithful and loving wife Dr. Gladys B. West and his three children Dr. Carolyn Oglesby (Barry), David West (Colleen), and Michael West (Lisa). He is also known as “Grandpa” to seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and “Uncle West “/” Uncle Teddy” to many nieces/great-nieces and nephews/great-nephews.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday 30 October 2024, from 4 PM to 7 PM, with a memorial service at 6 PM, at Brooks Bennett Funeral Home, 25662 A.P. Hill Blvd, Port Royal, VA 22535.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 P.M., Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Rocky Branch Baptist Church, 6009 Rocky Branch Road, Sutherland, VA, the Rev. Corey T. Bland, Pastor. A viewing will be held one hour before the service. The interment to follow at Dinwiddie Memorial Park.
Ira V. West was a hero in every sense of the word, and his legacy of love, faith, and service will continue to shine brightly.
