Ida C. Lewis

Ms. Ida C. Lewis was born on June 16, 1926, in Spotsylvania County to the late Elton D. Lewis and Catherine M. Clarke. She was called home to be with the Lord on March 26, 2024, in the comfort of her home and surrounded by family. She was a loving sister to her only sibling, her brother, Elton C. Lewis, who preceded her in death.

Ida attended school at the Piney Branch schoolhouse, which is now a historical landmark. She also attended and graduated from John J. Wright School. She worked as a domestic worker for several families in the city of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County. She joined Piney Branch Baptist Church at a young age and attended faithfully until the pandemic.

While attending Piney Branch, she served on several ministries. Those ministries include The Women’s Ministry, The Missionary Ministry, Willing Worker’s Club, and the Pulpit Committee for the flowers. Before her passing, she was one of the oldest members of Piney Branch and was considered a “Mother of the Church”. Although Ida was not as active in her later years, she was a member of the NAACP.

Ida was known for her stylish church hats, her love of flowers, and her delicious baked goods.  Some of the most talked about were her coconut cake, her chocolate cake, and her sweet potato pie. If you ever had the opportunity to taste any of those, you had a treat. You could point her out in any crowd just by seeing one of her hats. When she wasn’t baking or wearing her stylish hats you could find her in her screen house or garden. Ida loved sharing her flowers with those that she loved.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Kensey “Mac” Lewis, Barbara Lewis, Vern Lewis, Delorse Parker (Sam), Gary Lewis, David Lewis (Debbie), Sandra Willis (David), Karen Smith, all of Spotsylvania County, Carolyn Brooks (Cedell) of King George County, and Valerie Ford of Fredericksburg, Virginia. 12 grandchildren, Veronica Lewis, Franklin Lewis, Robinette Corbin, David Willis, Elton Lewis, Kamren Lewis, LJ Carter, Precious Lewis, Dennis Lewis Jr, and Lillian Lewis, all of Spotsylvania County, Cayla Brooks of King George County and Marcus Lewis of Mannheim, Germany; Richie Blasko (Debra), Sean Blasko (Jennifer), Dawn Encian, and Derek Shelton, 13 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, her niece, Jaqueline Lewis, nephew, Don Brown, and a host of other relatives and friends. Ida was preceded in death by her daughter, Amanda L. Lewis, son, Dennis C. Lewis, and grandson, David M. Shelton.

To honor Ms. Ida and her love of hats, the family is wearing a hat to the funeral. Please join them in honoring her memory by wearing your favorite church hat to the service.
