Harrison Benjamin Payton was born in King George County, Virginia on March 6, 1929, to the late Silas Payton and Alberta Hodge. He quietly put on his gold and white wings to fly peacefully home on July 24, 2023.
Affectionately known to family and friends as “Granddad”, “Uncle Harrison”, “Harry” or “Hus”, he would always find time to give a hand up, and was often willing to help those in need. He’d be helping you and under his breath fussing about it at the same time, but his help was indeed appreciated and was sincere. He loved playing cards and in his golden years his favorite past-time was watching folks make money on tv game shows.
If he saw you, he would size you up and give you a “new” name HE wanted you to have. For instance, he called one of his friends “Scooder Rooter”, a niece “Mitsubishi”, a friend “Gravel Gertie”, another friend “Puster Gut” and so on. But he was quiet, content, always watching, a father figure and mentor to many family members and others that he encountered.
Mr. Payton served his country as an active member in the U.S. Army. That gave him an opportunity to see how the World was while spending time in both Korea and Japan.
He lived in Washington D.C. for many years then moved to Prince Georges County, Maryland in his later years. He retired from Bakery & Confectionary Industry International as a truck driver.
Preceding Harrison is one daughter (Valerie Payton), one son (Alonzo Simons – “Bay Jack”), five brothers (James Peyton, Robert Payton, John Payton, George Peyton, Charles Peyton) and one Sister, (Charlotte Canada).
Harrison will be remembered fondly by his Sister, Frances Payton, of Washington, DC; a devoted grandson Michael Taylor of Washington DC; special friends John Washington of Suitland, Maryland, Diane Williams of Washington, D.C.; two devoted nephews (James & George Peyton), three devoted nieces (Barbara Ann Peyton, Linda Jackson, Marilyn Jackson), and a devoted nephew and Caregiver, Eric Clatterbuck of Temple Hills, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Burial will be held at First Church Ambar
