Deacon Guss P. Jones, the youngest son of the late Philip and Susie Blagmon Jones, was born in Bagby, Virginia in 1918. Robinson and Matilda Jones, his Grandparents, were also active members of Jerusalem Baptist Church. He departed this life on October 14, 2012.
Deacon Jones grew up in Caroline County where he received his early education in the public school system. He was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist church during the pastorate of Reverend Randolph W. Young in 1927. He was an active church member for 85 years. He was Jerusalem oldest member in regular attendance. He served as a member of the choir, Deacon's and Usher's Ministries. Deacon Jones had a rich base voice and sang with many quartets in Caroline and King and Queen Counties. During World War II, he was drafted from his employment in Washington into the U.S. Army. After receiving an Honorable Discharge, he was employed as a guard at the United States Quartermaster's Depot in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When this assignment ended, he was employed by Merck Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from which he retired after 33 years of dedicated service. While in Philadelphia; he joined the Mount Olivet Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he sang with the Inspirational Choir for 25 years. During this time he also attended the New Era Theological Institute in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He also graduated from the Radio Electronics Institute as a Radio and TV repair technician. For a number of years, he ran a successful TV repair business from his home. Deacon Jones was united in Holy matrimony to Olivia Lindsey Jones in 1946, in Richmond Virginia.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Olivia Lindsey Jones, one dedicated son Augustus Jones (Dorothy), and granddaughter Araevia, whom reside in Houston, Texas. He will also be remembered by a host of devoted cousins and friends.
