Grant Maxwell Washington

Grant Maxwell Washington departed this life into eternal rest on June 18, 2009 at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

He was born in Middlesex, Virginia, May 13, 1926 to the late Marcus and Shelly Grimes Washington. As a young boy, he learned the skillful craft of shoemaking from his father. He later inherited the shoemaking business that his father proudly built.

In 1950, he was joined in holy matrimony to the late Marion Marie Baylor. From this union, they parented three children, Phyllis Washington, Shirley and Baby Grant, Jr., who both preceded him in death.

At an early age, he gave his life to Christ at his hometown church in Saluda. Later in life, he joined Shiloh Baptist Church in Port Royal, Virginia where he was a dedicated trustee for over 20 years.

He began his formal education in the Middlesex County Public School system. He then went on to study business at Virginia Union University. He aided many Caroline County residents with their tax preparation for a number of years. Because of his business savvy and wit, he was well known within the community as "The Tax Man". He also took care of the taxes for Shiloh Baptist until his health began to fail him.

He was a United States Navy veteran where he witnessed firsthand the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. After his tenure with the Navy, he worked for the United States Government at Quantico as a supervisor. He retired from Quantico after over 30 years of service.

Grant leaves to cherish his memories his devoted and loving daughter Phyllis Washington. Two sisters-in-law, Mary Baylor of Woodford, Virginia and Lillian Washington of Middlesex, Virginia, nine nieces, ten nephews and a host of cousins. Two dedicated nieces, Dorothy Wright and Carlene Randle, both of Woodford, Virginia and two special nephews James "Jimmy" Baylor of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Samuel Gresham of Woodford, Virginia.
