Glorine Elizabeth Buckner, affectionately known as "Glo", departed this life on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was 63 at the time of her passing.
Glo was born on December 8, 1946 to the late Richard "Dick" and Mary "Elizabeth" Buckner in King George, VA. She was the oldest of their seven children. She received her education and graduated from Ralph Bunche High School in 1965. Glo was known to her classmates as "Hannah Buck" and was known for her sharp wit and humor. The Class of 1965's motto was "They Conquer, Who Believe They Can" and Glo's life exemplified this motto to the fullest.
Glo enjoyed working and helping others. Nothing was ever too hard for her because she always believed she could do it. Deciding to do something different with her life, she moved to New York where she worked at Credit Union 1199 in the Bronx as the Branch Supervisor. After returning to her southern roots, Glo put on a hardhat and worked construction for a time earning the respect of her male coworkers; she hung in there right alongside them pulling her own weight. She later decided to become a security guard. She achieved success in this field by earning the title of Captain before she left. This was a natural position for her because she was born to it. She led her family with authority and could do no less as a security guard. Because she loved her guards, Glo stayed involved in helping them and decided to work as their advocate. In her role as an advocate she worked tirelessly to negotiate the rights of the guards with their management. She did this until the Lord called her to be with Him. Her many career paths attest to her determination to succeed in whatever position she held. Glo was a strong woman and loved a challenge. She was so determined that by the time she mastered a new job skill, she was usually in a leadership role. She enjoyed being in charge.
Glo was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She loved her four children dearly and was happiest when she had them all gathered together. She enjoyed laughing and joking with them and their children. As the eldest child, she took her responsibility for looking after her brothers and sisters seriously and had a hand in raising them all. They looked up to her and would often call her just to get advice. Her nieces and nephews loved their Aunt Glo and she loved them. They ran from her as children when they did wrong but flocked to her as an adult. Glo's home was the family gathering place. It didn't matter if she lived in Westhampton Beach, NY, King George, VA, District Heights, MD, or Lothian, MD, all knew how to get to her place and were welcomed. When she said come visit, she meant it.
Glo loved to read and could always be seen with a book hanging out of her purse. If she had a moment, she wouldn't waste it but would whip out her book and read. Without meaning to, she could completely ignore you if she had a good book. She enjoyed cooking and was renowned for her fried fish, cabbage, potoato salad, and who could forget her spaghetti? When it came time to slow down, Glo wouldn't because she had things to do. She was in charge of a family. To her, family also included friends. It didn't matter to her if you were blood-related or just a close family friend, she loved one and all. Those who met Glo could not leave her presence without feeling a special tenderness for her. She was an intuitive person and somehow knew what a person needed. If it was in her ability, she would provide that need. She had an understanding that was beyond measure and provided a shoulder, a meal, a bed, and sometimes a good shake to many. Even when her human heart began to fail she continued to give what she gave best; her love.
Glo is survived by her son, Leon Johnson, Jr., White Plains, MD, and three daughters, Leona Hollins, Chesapeake, VA; Sandra Davis-Conway, Woodbridge, VA; Sondra Davis-Morton, Lothian, MD; 11 grandchildren: Tierra Davis, Robert Davis, DeAndre' Davis, Carla Johnson, Samantha Johnson, Jasmine Conway, Taylor Conway, Carl Johnson, Carmen Johnson, Jordan Conway, and Raymond Morton, III; one great-grandchild, Skye Davis; one son-in-law, Antrone' Conway, Woodbridge, VA; three brothers John Buckner, Sr., Richard Buckner and Lawrence Buckner, all of King George, VA; three sisters, Nancy Johnson of Waldorf, MD; Christine Foster and Karen Buckner of King George, VA; one aunt, Helen Buckner, King George, VA; and one sister-in-law, Linda Buckner, King George, VA. Glo is also survived by 4 nieces, 8 nephews, 7 great-nieces and 5 great-nephews in addition to a host of cousins.
Glo's love spread to so many people; she made everyone feel special. Though not mentioned, you all remain unforgotten.
