Gladys A Johnson was born to the late James Robinson and Mary Robinson Nickens on February 28, 1938, in Caroline County, VA. She peacefully departed from his earthly life on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at VCU Tappahannock Hospital.
Gladys received her education through the Caroline County Public School system. She was baptized at an early age and became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Supply VA. Gladys enjoyed serving on the Kitchen Committee and singing in the choir. She attended church regularly until her health began to decline.
She worked for General Products for 25 years until she retired in 1988.
Gladys married Malchia Johnson, on May 6, 1954. From this union they were blessed with four children and many years of memories. In her adult life she loved helping others and working with her hands. She was so creative and could make some of the best things for any holiday. Gladys loved her family and did everything she could for them. She was known for her corn pudding and lemon meringue pies. She was an AVON consultant for many years. She loved to travel and enjoyed life to the fullest until her health began to decline.
Gladys was predeceased by her grandparents: Morris and Emma Armstead, her parents: James Robinson and Mary Robinson Nickens, her siblings: Pearl Johnson, Dorothy Coleman, Fannie Coleman, Lola Hinson, James Robinson, Ryland Robinson, Walter Robinson, and Gilbert Nickens her son in-law: James L Fortune Sr.
Gladys leaves to cherish her memory: her loving and devoted husband of 68 years: Malchia Johnson; her daughters: Deaconess Doris Fortune of Hustle, VA; Patricia Johnson of Bowling Green VA; two sons: Malchia Johnson (Delphine) of Loretto, Virginia and David Johnson of Port Royal, VA; nine grandchildren: Nathaniel Fortune, Evangelist Deborah Taylor (Tony), James Fortune, Jr. (Nicole), Lionel Johnson, Shana Banks (Tony), Dexter Johnson (Themia), Milton Johnson, Diandra Hunter, Ebony Winston (Chris); 31 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren: her sisters: Helen Morgan, Addie Fortune, Emma Childs; one sister in-law: Betty Nickens, Special Nieces: Shirley Coleman, Carolyn Ann Robinson who served as caregivers; Darlene Breeden, her riding partner, Two close friends: Mary Frances Deyo, Jackie Rose, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
I am at peace, my souls at rest. There is no need for tears
